Dimension 3.2: Managing Student Behavior

The teacher establishes, communicates, and maintains clear expectations for student behavior.

A piece of evidence that satisfies this domain is this document that discusses the positive and negative consequences for behavior, both in the classroom and throughout the rest of the school. My cooperating teacher during my student teaching semester made use of a token system known as “Golden Tickets”. The document I included for this example is the same one she would include in her plans for substitute teachers, so they could uphold this same system in the classroom which was familiar to her students.

When a student demonstrated good behavior, such as sitting quietly during a lesson or assisting another student of their own initiative, they received a golden ticket. There were, however, situations where a student showed outstanding citizenship in the classroom, so they were directed to collect more tickets. The number of tickets a student could receive at any given moment is based on the teacher’s decision of how many should be rewarded for the specific behavior. This system was effective in the classroom because it advocated for good behavior among the students, and encouraged them to follow an example set by their peers. Their was also the incentive on Fun Friday, which allowed the person with the most number of golden tickets to pick their center first. If a student wanted to be on the computer that week, for example, but had a low number of golden tickets and they were all claimed, they would try harder the next week to improve their behavior so they could earn that reward.

The golden ticket system also worked to manage negative behavior for the same reason. If a student demonstrated any signs of disruptive behavior, they would lose a ticket, or more depending on the severity of the offense. The incentive to improve their behavior also follows along the same logic as positive behavior since the loss of tickets could result in that student not getting the Fun Friday center they wanted. The distribution of the golden ticket certificates also offers the opportunity to have a discussion with this student about their behavior during the week and ways they can improve.
