They All Saw a Cat

“The cat walked through the world, with its whiskers, ears and paws…”

Wenzel, B. (2016). They all saw a cat. San Francisco: Chronicle Books.

Genre: Fiction/Picture Book

This book by Brendan Wenzel shows how perspective shapes what we see. Fear especially falls into this since different people have different fears. There were only a fear animals in this book who saw the cat and felt fear, such as the mouse. The cat appears differently to every single being it comes across. The child saw the cat as a cute and friendly pet while the fish saw it as a pair of big yellow eyes. As mentioned, the mouse saw a ferocious monster with sharp claws and a terrifying red color in the background. Fear is a state of mind, in a way, which can be influenced by perception and emotions. This book is not necessarily a book about fear, but it illustrates the reality that fear is unique to each person.
